Episode 18: Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973)

For a long time, this movie retained a part where the director said “Cut” at the end of a scene. That fact is an indication that this movie was rushed as well as a bit careless, but it’s not all bad – and it can be funny. So funny in fact, it was a popular episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Brian and Nate discuss the infamous car chase, Easter Island, superhero wrestling action, and everything else about this glorious train-wreck. Our related topic is the history and effects of nuclear testing.

Episode 17: Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972)

For this week’s episode, we present Brian’s favorite Godzilla movie! Though it’s an underrated movie, it sold the most tickets of any of the late Showa series movies (after 1968). It’s also filmed well, full of action, yet also cerebral. The movie contains a story with multi-layered symbolism, yet it has lots of fire, explosions, and monster fights. Plus it’s infused with the Japanese National Spirit. Listen to Nate and Brian synthesize everything fascinating about this movie. Our related topics are the symbolism of Godzilla vs. Gigan and the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics. Our 4k video for this episode was made at a location much farther away from home than usual: New York state.

We’d like to send a shout-out to our patrons Kyoei Toshi and Sean Stiff for pledging at the Kaiju Visionary level. Thank you for your support! We really appreciate it.

This episode is dedicated to Haruo Nakajima.

Episode 16: Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971)

It’s 70s Month at Kaijuvision Radio, and we begin with the most counter-culture entry in the franchise.  We have a smog-based monster that kills hippies (and quite a few others)! Listen as Brian and Nate analyze and appreciate this fascinating and experimental film. Only Godzilla can “Save the Earth”.  Our related topics are pollution in Japan and the Two Nixon Shocks.

Episode 15: All Monsters Attack (1969)

Nate and Brian tackle our first postmodern Godzilla movie, and the final movie of Late 60s Month. We give this movie the appreciation it deserves, as there is plenty to analyze. Our related topics are escapism, industrial society, international bullies. There are two A-10 fighters that fly through the sky during 1:00:53-1:01:17 of the video.

Episode 14: Destroy All Monsters (1968)

We swear we’re not under Kilaak control, but we are pretty big fanboys of this movie. Before Marvel Studios made “The Avengers”, there was this film, which was intended to be the culmination of the studio’s kaiju films and the Godzilla series’ grand finale. Listen to Brian and Nate gush over this fan favorite film that defies analysis. Our related topics are the 1968 student demonstrations in Japan, the Bonin (Ogasawara) Islands being returned to Japan, and the highest economic growth in Japanese history (measured by % growth).

Episode 13: Son of Godzilla (1967)

Believe it or not, this was intended to be a date movie. We have a cute monster that resembles a human baby. Japan experienced a huge drop in the birth rate in the year before this movie was released, so maybe this date movie was intended to get couples in the mood? Listen to Nate and Brian discuss this challenging and extremely different kind of Godzilla movie.  Our related topics are weather control, extreme weather, and the Three Non-nuclear principles.

Episode 12: Ebirah – Horror of the Deep! (1966)

City slicker Brian and country boy Nate discuss the Godzilla film for young people with a South Seas adventure flavor.  Though it’s featured in Mystery Science Theater 3000, we conclude that this a considerably underestimated film.  Our related topic is how kaiju film audiences changed during this decade.

We’d like to send a shout-out to our patrons Kyoei Toshi and Sean Stiff for pledging at the Kaiju Visionary level.  Thank you for your support!  We really appreciate it.
